Cove to Cove: Exploring the Black Canyon with Alpacka Rafts

When a dream company like Alpacka Rafts asks you to write a story for them, you say yes. As someone who lives for intentional, low-impact adventures, getting the chance to write about paddling through the Black Canyon felt like a perfect alignment of values and voice.
The article is my first-person account of my paddling journey through the stunning Black Canyon of the Colorado River (The Grand). As a travel writer and environmental advocate, I approached this piece and journey as more than an adventure story but as a layered guide. My goal was to transport the reader to this gorgeous space, provide them with the necessary information for their possible trip, and infuse the regional history and environmental nuances. Like any outdoor adventure, the canyon pushed me to grow and trust my ability in a way that only comes from navigating wild waters under your own power.
My writing leaned into the meditative rhythm of paddling, while offering readers insight into the geological and ecological wonders of the canyon. I also included practical notes for fellow paddlers, focusing on respect for place, and low-impact travel with tools like Leave No Trace, mirroring Alpacka’s mission to protect the wild waters we have the privilege to experience.
